MOUNTAIN
VIEW, CA: It’s so easy to get overwhelmed as a parent of a newborn…and amid
the chaos and confusion, the thought of plowing through whole shelves of
parenting books to find the right advice is more than many new parents can
handle.
The solution: A “Reader’s Digest” of great parenting tips, in easy nuggets,
compiled from a wide array of authoritative sources…and organized into a
quick paragraph or two per day, for the first 24 weeks of life. Baby Be
Loved: Growing and Learning Together During the First 24 Weeks offers
exercises, songs, activities, even suggestions for decoration.
Filled with easy, free or very cheap activities, each tied to the
appropriate developmental stage day by day and week by week, the book
emphasizes the ways a loving, active environment can increase babies’
physical, social, intellectual, and emotional development.
Each week’s suggestions fit on a page, and the entire book can be hung like
a calendar, so that the week’s activities are right there in plain sight.
(See enclosed sample page.) Each week also offers a full-page,
developmentally appropriate piece of art by Joel Dugan
The book (ISBN 0-9705242-0-X, $24.95), was created by Susan Ann Stelfox out
of her own frustration at not finding a one-stop source for advice during
those first precious, vital weeks—when she became a first-time new mom at
age 40. Stelfox, a breast cancer survivor, had built prodigious research
skills in her quest for information about her disease, and used those skills
to absorb and organize everything she could find about new-baby development.
She read such experts as Dr. Penelope Leach and Dr. Marilyn Segal, and
rewrote their best tips into one-paragraph “bonbons” that are easy to
digest—and easy for even a harried new mom to put into practice. All the
information was vetted by pediatrician Nancy Iverson, M.D.
“Filled with daily parent-child activities, from songs and exercises to
special illustrations, to help stimulate a new baby’s senses and development
for the first twenty-four weeks… excellent and highly recommended.”
