Baby Development Stages

The First Six Months

A word about baby development stages. This article is meant for information purpose only.
All babies are on their own time tables and what's here are just averages in the normal development of a newborn. Some babies may reach the milestones earlier or later than mentioned. If you are concerned please seek the advice of your pediatrician.

A baby grows and develops more in the first year of his life than he does at any other time. These changes occur fast and keeping a baby book to record each milestone is a good idea.

Month one has baby starting to life her head while her neck muscles develop. A baby this age still needs help and support with her head, so extra care should be taken while holding her.

Month two he is lifting his head with no help. His muscles have developed and strengthened considerably. He may shine his first smile at you and anyone who cares to look. He can blow bubbles with his saliva and coo too.

Month three will reveal a nice squeal from her vocal chords. She can also suck on her hands.

Month four will have him putting objects into his mouth. By now he can roll over on occasion. This may be the month when you see those first little teeth poke through.

Month five she can probably sit up for short spurts without any help. If she still tends to lean or fall over - try offering some support like a Bumbo or a pillow made especially for helping her to sit up.

Month six he may try to get up into the crawling position. He can rock back and forth on his hands and knees. He will also be able to grasp and hold favorite toys. He's aware of his favorite people – his parents. This is when those bonds are really strong.
